On April 22, 2024, I loaded my car with buckets of paint and all sorts of brushes and sponges because I had an appointment with the directors of the parents’ home of the Association for Children with Cancer in Freiburg (helfen-hilft.de). I have supported this association, which does a tremendous job, for many years. Together with two friends from my hometown, I published three cookbooks and a children’s book. With the sales proceeds, 100% of which went to the association, we were able to donate over €50,000.

A North Sea landscape for the new parents' house in Freiburg
Helfen-hilft.de has been operating a parents’ home for many years, where affected families can stay and receive care while their sick child is in a nearby hospital. This is an incredible relief for the parents and siblings, who often spend many months accompanying a sick child through treatment. With the new children’s hospital now in Freiburg, a new parents’ home also had to be built. This major project was also undertaken by the support association, which is financed entirely through donations.
At the inauguration of the new parents’ home, I also visited the new rooms where the siblings receive professional care and support. This unit was to be called “Sibling Island” in the future. A wooden boat for playing and relaxing had already been purchased for this purpose. This is where I came up with the idea of decorating the walls of the large room to match. The children and young people should feel like they were at the seaside, on the North Sea. The teachers gratefully and enthusiastically accepted my offer to donate this work to the association.
And so, within four days, two large murals were created, featuring a beach and ocean view and a dune landscape. During this time, I was able to stay overnight at the parents’ house, which was a truly great help and fantastic. The rooms are so beautiful there, and the overall care is exemplary. The parents always find something to eat when they return to the parents’ house after a strenuous day at the children’s hospital.
I really enjoyed this work, even though it was exhausting for me and I was pretty exhausted afterwards :)). I would do it again anytime!
